Divine Feminine: Norse Goddess Hel

Hel is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda. She is the ruler of the underworld where she takes care of the souls of those who haven’t died in battle. Hel guides these souls through the cycle of death and rebirth. She is a gatekeeper and protector and is especially keen of children and women who died in childbirth. You may turn to her for matters of compassion, healing, transformation, death and change.

I chose to depict Hel with an apple, her body half covered in shadows. Many artworks show her as a half skeletal zombie like woman. Even though I enjoy these interpretations of her, I wanted to emphasize her gentle and warm side in my illustration. Everything works in circles, every end is also a new beginning. I chose to draw Hel with a lush apple, a symbol for life in the hands of death.
